  • On May 24 the students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni of The New School community gathered to celebrate the 3,263 members of the Class of 2013 at the university's 77th commencement exercises.

Famed FiveThirtyEight blogger and best-selling author Nate Silver delivered the keynote address, and Miles Kohrman (Lang, ’13) took the podium for the student address. Follow the links on this page for the full text of their speeches.

Along with Silver, honorary degrees were presented to three individuals whose original perspectives and contributions embody The New School’s dedication to public action and critical thinking: Caterina Fake, founder of Flickr and co-founder of Hunch; Joi Ito, director of the MIT Media Lab, a prominent advocate for global internet freedom; and Khalil Gibran Muhammad, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library and author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime and the Making of Modern Urban America.
