Training Sessions
The university is committed to the realization of its employees’ potential and strives to create a vibrant culture where all employees can succeed, productivity is enhanced, and diversity is valued. The following lists some of the training sessions that are currently available to employees by the university.
Leadership and Management Training
We offer a number of workshops addressing leadership and management that are geared towards all supervisors and managers. New Manager training covers areas including effective management techniques, institutional policies and procedures, and attendance and disciplinary issues. Other workshops focus on recruiting as hiring managers, avoiding legal liability, personality types, and leadership styles.
Performance Appraisals
This training covers The New School’s performance appraisal process and its forms and reviews techniques for writing a fair assessment and providing constructive feedback. In addition, there are workshops on ways employees can maximize the effectiveness of the performance appraisal process.
Career and Professional Development
Career and Professional Development, now in its third year, provides all union clerical and administrative staff with tips and tools for achieving career goals. The purpose of career planning is to make the most of one’s career, education, and life. Generally an ongoing process, career planning takes place in three stages:
- Stage 1: Exploring personal interests, abilities, and career options
- Stage 2: Thinking about options and career goals and making plans to support those goals
- Stage 3: Acting to achieve goals
These areas can be worked on individually or simultaneously. Career and Professional Development offers workshops on each of these areas, and employees can choose to sign up for one or more in the series, depending on their needs.
Wellness and Work life Services
Wellness programs and Work-Life resources help faculty and staff find a healthy and manageable balance between work and personal life. Employees are most productive when they have achieved a balance in their responsibilities--both in and out of the job--as well as successfully meeting their health and wellness goals.
The university offers a variety of free wellness programs. For additional details, please refer to the training calendar.
Our Employee Assistance Program, provided through Employee Assistance Program Consortium (EAPC), offers free and confidential counseling sessions and/or referrals on a range of issues, including family matters, stress, drug abuse, depression, issues of personal growth and transition, and crisis management. Call 212.746.5890 for more information.
Technology Training
As the university does not currently provide on- campus training for employees who are interested in learning more about computers or want to become proficient in software applications, we will provide a list of resources for help with Excel, Word, and other applications. These programs are not sponsored by the university.
