International Students

Applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States must provide certain documents in addition to the regular application materials. If a document cannot be sent directly to The New School from the source, you must obtain an official copy and mail it to Office of Admission with a Materials Cover Sheet. Documents attached to email or sent as messages from a mobile device will not be accepted.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

If English is not your primary language, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Your test score must be sent directly from ETS to the Office of Admission. Our institution code is 2572. A minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test, 550 on the written test, or 213 on the computer-based test is required for admission to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. If you are a resident of the UK and English is not your primary language, you can substitute International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examination for the TOEFL, minimum score 7.0.

International Transcripts

You must provide an original transcript from every secondary school or college attended, and if the original transcript is not in English, it must be accompanied by a certified English language translation.

Applicants who wish to transfer academic credits earned at institutions outside the United States must also have their transcript(s) evaluated by World Education Services (WES), our preferred provider, or by another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A course-by-course evaluation report must be prepared for each transcript. Please start the evaluation process as early as possible, including the submission of all required documents to WES (or another provider), to ensure the timely completion of the evaluation report. Instruct the provider to send the report to:

The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music
Office of Admission
72 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY 10011

If you request a WES report online, search for New School Jazz when selecting your institution.
