Eugene Lang College offers the Bachelor of Arts in

Double Majors, Double Minors, and Double Concentrations

Student may be able to declare and complete up to two (2) majors and/or two (2) minors as part of their course of study.

Students completing a double major receive one degree, with both majors noted on the transcript. Completing a double major requires fulfillment of all the requirements for both degree programs. The senior capstone may be either a joint project or the senior seminar from one of the degree programs (with approval from the chairs of both programs). No more than three (3) courses can be applied toward both degrees. Students interested in a double major should consult with advisors in both programs to find out whether completing the two majors, even with double counting of three courses, would significantly increase the length of time they would need to graduate.

Similarly, students can complete two minors, where offered, by fulfilling all the requirements for both minor programs. Since a minor requires fewer courses in total, no more than two (2) courses can be applied toward both minors (or to a major-minor combination).

Where concentrations are offered within a major, students can complete two concentrations, but no more than two (2) courses can be applied toward both concentrations.

Restrictions:

  • Students who major in Liberal Arts cannot elect either a minor or a double major.
  • Students pursuing a BS in Environmental Studies can complete a minor but not a double major. However, students pursuing a BA in Environmental Studies can pursue a second major or a minor.
  • In accordance with current New York State certifications, the following are not options for dual degrees at The New School: BA/BS, BA/BBA, BS/BBA, and BS/BFA.

Dual-Degree BA/BFA Programs and Bachelor's-Master's Programs

Lang students who don't want to choose between a liberal arts education and a studio program in art or music can enter the university's five-year dual-degree BA/BFA program and complete both a bachelor of arts degree at Lang and a BFA at either Parsons The New School for Design or The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Lang students can also take advantage of combined bachelor's-master's degree programs offered with some of the university's graduate schools, which can accelerate a student's progress toward completion of a master's program. See the information about bachelor's-master's programs below.

General Degree Requirements at Eugene Lang College

  • Successful completion of 120 credits:
    • Bachelor of Arts students must complete at least 90 liberal arts credits and not more than 30 credits in non-liberal arts courses (defined as studio and practice-based courses and internships)
    • Bachelor of Science (Environmental Studies only) students must complete at least 60 liberal arts credits and not more than 60 credits in non-liberal arts courses (defined as studio and practice-based courses and internships)
  • Five required foundation courses: Writing the Essay 1, Writing the Essay 2, First-Year Workshop, First-Year Advising Seminar, and Reading NYC
  • Two University Lecture (ULEC) courses (transfer students entering with sophomore status or higher are exempt from this requirement)
  • Completion of the requirements for a Lang major or interdisciplinary program (usually 13 courses), including a senior capstone
  • For students who entered Lang as freshmen, at least 40 credits in 3000- or higher-level courses (see below for requirements transfer students)
  • Senior-year residency: Students must spend their final two semesters in residence at Eugene Lang College.

Notes for Transfer Students

  • Transfer students must complete a minimum of 60 credits at The New School.
  • Transfer credits (prorated) are counted toward the requirement of 40 credits in 3000- or higher-level courses.
  • Transfer students can apply up to three courses (9 credits) taken at other institutions to fulfill major or interdisciplinary program requirements, with the permission of the chair or director of the major program at Lang. The student may be required to provide course syllabi for evaluation.

BA/BFA Degree Requirements

  • Successful completion of a minimum of 180 credits, including at least 90 credits in liberal arts courses and 90 credits in non-liberal arts (studio and practice-based) courses
  • For Parsons BA/BFA students, Writing the Essay 1 and 2; for Jazz BA/BFA students, Writing the Essay 1 (BA/BFA students, whether Parsons or Jazz, are not required to complete the Advising Seminar, First-Year Workshop, or Reading NYC.)
  • Registration for at least one Lang course every semester in residence, for a minimum of 44 credits taken at Lang
  • Completion of the requirements for a Lang major or interdisciplinary program
  • Completion of the requirements for the Parsons or Jazz BFA program (Note to transfer students: Transferability of prior studio credits is determined by the Parsons and Jazz admission offices.)

Note: BA/BFA students do not have to complete University Lectures (ULEC) courses unless a lecture is required by their particular major (transfer students are exempt from this requirement).

Bachelor's/Master's Programs

Students can accelerate their progress toward a master's degree by combining an undergraduate program at Eugene Lang College with graduate-level courses in one of the university's graduate schools.

During their junior year, students who plan on going to graduate school can apply for acceptance to a BA/MA program (see below for credit requirements). If admitted, a student can earn up to 12 swing credits (equivalent to one semester of graduate school) applicable toward both degrees, assuming that the student applies for and is admitted to the graduate program upon completion of the bachelor's degree. The benefits of the program include less time needed to complete the master's degree, significant tuition savings, greater access to graduate-level courses as an undergraduate, and waiver of the Graduate Record Examination and application fees when applying for admission to the graduate program.

Applicants must have completed or be enrolled to complete a total of 60 undergraduate credits. Transfer students must have completed or be in the process of completing at least one full year in residence at Lang. We recommend that all students contact an admission representative from the graduate program of interest or attend an information session to learn more.
