The accreditation evaluation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education is a major undertaking which all universities undergo every ten years. Originally, The New School was to be evaluated in 2012-2013. However, because this process offers the university an ideal opportunity to take a comprehensive look at our student experience, faculty, academic programs, administrative operations, resources, and infrastructure, President Van Zandt submitted a request for a one year extension so the process may align with the strategic planning process he is initiating.  

This website is designed to inform and educate the community about reaccreditation. A university-wide steering committee is leading a self-study process to assess our standing, performance, and progress in relation to the 14 standards of excellence (PDF) outlined by Middle States. Through this process, we will demonstrate our strengths, identify areas for improvement, and articulate our priorities. This site will serve as a repository for updates, documentation, and messages from the Steering Committee and university leadership as the process unfolds.  

Since The New School’s last reaccreditation review in 2003, the university has grown and changed dramatically. New degree programs, more full-time and tenured faculty, and an enhanced physical campus are serving a larger student body. The Middle States review gives us an opportunity to present evidence of our many assets to our peers in higher education. At the same time, through its intersection with the university’s strategic planning process the review will both reflect and guide continued improvement and the continuing transformation of this dynamic institution.
