About The Mannes Beethoven Institute
Thomas Sauer, Director
In a departure, the 13th annual Mannes Beethoven Institute will incorporate music of our time into an intensive six-day Beethoven seminar. This year's institute will take place May 30-June 4, 2013. The solo and chamber works of Peter Lieberson (1946-2011), known for their lyricism and beauty, will be studied alongside Beethoven’s sonatas, trios, and string quartets. Participants are encouraged to bring a Lieberson piece to life with the same intensity that they devote to a Beethoven work of their choice.
Applications are welcome in the following categories: solo piano; pre-formed violin/piano duo; pre-formed cello/piano duo; pre-formed piano trio; pre-formed string trio; and pre-formed string quartet. Enrollment will be strictly limited to ensure that all participants leave the Institute with a deeper understanding of Beethoven and a new awareness of one of America's contemporary masters. A list of Peter Lieberson's works for solo piano, violin/piano and cello/piano duo, string quartet, and piano quintet can be found here. Any questions regarding suitability of repertoire should be addressed to Thomas Sauer at BeethovenInstitute@newschool.edu.
The Beethoven Institute will be held at Mannes College The New School for Music on Manhattan's Upper West Side; the institute is open to students and young professionals.
