During the 2013 45th Annual New York String Orchestra Seminar, New School Concerts Department celebrates Jaime Laredo's 20th Anniversary as artistic director and conductor. The program will bring 45 string players as well as 18 wind and brass players ages 15-22 to New York City from December 19 to December 28, 2013. There is no application fee for the program, and all accepted students participate without fee, including all educational costs, as well as local housing, meals, valued at over $3,500 per student.
2013 Application will be available in July, 2013.
During preparations for concerts presented by Carnegie Hall, including intensive orchestral rehearsals with Laredo and renowned soloists, and in chamber music workshops with some of the country's most celebrated artists, young musicians are introduced to a musical philosophy emphasizing self-expression beyond technical mastery.
History of the Seminar
Arts administrator and artist manager Frank Salomon created the seminar in 1969 for Alexander Schneider, one of the 20th century's most important musical figures. Schneider had a deep commitment to young artists and was an inspiration to generations of musicians. He believed that music has to "come from your heart and your soul or it has no meaning." The New York String Orchestra Seminar was designed to offer professional training to highly gifted string, wind, brass, and timpani students at an age when their musical understanding and professional goals are developing.
In 1993, acclaimed conductor, soloist, and chamber musician Jaime Laredo, who was Schneider's personal choice for successor, became artistic director and conductor of the seminar. Entrusted with the program's mission, Laredo introduced the country's most exceptional young musicians to new musical ideas at a formative point in their development, offering them chamber music coaching from members of the world's top ensembles, and giving them the challenge of performing on a high professional level on stage in Carnegie Hall.
