Career Services

The Office of Career Services offers students and alumni of The New School for Social Research a wide array of information about the academic and non-academic job markets and points of access to both. All of our services, resources, and announcements are published on our blog, "NSSR Career Hub."

We hold workshops on a range of career-related topics: the job search process; writing a curriculum vitae, résumé, and cover letter; job interviewing and networking techniques; how to get teaching jobs while you're in graduate school; applying for external research funding; how to prepare a conference abstract and presentation; how to create a teaching portfolio or a research statement; and academic publishing. We also sponsor speakers and events related to jobs and careers outside of academia. Check out our job search and external funding opportunities resources.

Visit the blog to see what's going on right now. Some information is maintained permanently here on the website: Job Search Tools and Strategies is a step-by-step guide to getting a job in or outside academia; Job Search Links are posted, categorized by type and discipline, that direct students toward career resources in their fields.

Resources for finding external funding opportunities are published on our External Funding website. We provide links to funding organizations categorized by discipline; a spreadsheet listing funding organizations searchable by discipline, kind of funding and many more criteria; an article on the “Art of Writing Proposals”; an article on "Helping Students to Tell Their Story"; and other general information about grants and how to obtain them.

We have also compiled some specific databases of resources likely to be of interest to NSSR students. The databases available so far: Teaching Institutions in the Tristate area; Nonprofit Organizations in NYC; Financial Firms in NYC; Economic Internships; Conferences; Jobs for Psychology MAs; and Think Tanks in NYC.

Call or email the Office of Career Services if you have questions or wish to set up an appointment, or stop by during our walk-in hours.
