The Bachelor of Science in Urban Design at Parsons is the country's first undergraduate urban design degree program housed in an art and design school. Combining fieldwork, design studio and liberal arts instruction, and applied project-based research, the program embodies the mission of civic engagement at the New School. Students in the program creatively reimagine the many roles of the urban designer, often inspired by their experience of living and studying in New York City.
Students in the BS in Urban Design program examine the greatest challenges of the 21st century: social sustainability and ecological resilience in a rapidly urbanizing world. Based in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons, students and faculty explore design as a core capability and strategic asset in the sustainable practices of individuals, groups, communities, and organizations. Student projects are connected to cities through coursework, international research collaborations, and study abroad opportunities.
Urban Design coursework enables students to acquire an understanding of design processes and methods, such as development of a project through drawing and collaboration as a form of theoretical and applied research. The program is designed for students who want to engage with the life of New York City; program exercises often place students in direct contact with the New School neighborhood, teaching them to think and operate systemically, strategically, and playfully.
