The first year at Parsons is a transitional time in which students gain confidence, tools, and skills, and are introduced to the urban environment of New York City. Students who are passionate about all kinds of art and design come together in required first-year courses before continuing on to study in different bachelor's degree programs at Parsons. This mix of students is an important and exciting part of the first-year experience and reflects an art and design world that is becoming increasingly transdisciplinary.
For students entering Parsons in spring 2013, the first-year curriculum is taught through the Foundation program, which prepares students with a year of broadly relevant art and design coursework before they declare a major. Applicants should apply to the Foundation program if they are interested in any of the following majors:
* See first-year entry alternatives below.
Applicants interested in Design and Management should apply for first-year entry into this program. There is no portfolio requirement for Design and Management; please see the BBA application instructions for details.
The BFA programs in Design and Technology and Photography accept applications for entry directly into the first-year. Communication Design majors may also consider applying to Design and Technology as an alternative path into the Communication Design program. Applicants for first-year entry into these programs should submit portfolios as outlined below.
