Students matriculated in the self-designed liberal arts program (BA or BS) can earn credits for internships arranged
through the School of Undergraduate Studies. Internship credits are always considered "non-liberal arts" for purposes of BA or BS degree requirements. To be eligible, a student must have completed at
least 12 credits in residence at The New School for Public Engagement, be in good academic standing, and have fewer than 78 transfer credits on his or her transcript. Students can take
two internships as part of their program of study. Internships are set
up as courses, normally carrying three credits, to be completed within one
academic term. A student must work 12-15 hours per week
for fifteen weeks to earn 3 credits.
Application Process
First, discuss your idea for an internship with your faculty advisor, who will arrange a meeting with the associate director of the School of
Undergraduate Studies, who will want to know how the proposed internship will advance your
BA or BS program of study and personal goals. If your idea is approved, you must provide the associate director with documentation about the organization offering the
internship and a brief job description. If the associate director agrees that the internship meets
the requirements of the School of Undergraduate Studies, you will be given the Internship Contract form (downloadable PDF), which must be completed and signed by you and the sponsoring organization.
The contract must
specify
- Number of hours you are expected to work for the sponsor
- Beginning and ending dates of the internship
- Name, title, mailing address, telephone number, and email address of your prospective on-site supervisor
The signed contract must be returned to the associate director of the School of Undergraduate Studies for approval, along with a detailed description of the intern's responsibilities
provided by the organization's on-site supervisor or other responsible manager and your written explanation of how the internship will enhance
your program of study.
The application process must be completed before or during
the registration period of the academic term for which the internship is
proposed. Once The New School approves the contract, the registrar will set up the course and you can register for the internship. Tuition for
internships is charged per credit, the same as other courses. Internships have the same add/drop deadlines as
regular courses.
Evaluation
When the internship is concluded, you submit a four-to-seven page written report to the associate director of the School of Undergraduate Studies describing your internship experience in the context of your academic program. At the same time, your on-site
supervisor completes a Supervisor Evaluation form provided by the School of Undergraduate Studies and returns it separately to the associate director. Based on these two documents, the associate director will assign a grade of "P" (Pass; credit is awarded) or "U"
(Unsatisfactory; no credit is awarded).
