The New School's international reputation for academic excellence and its location in New York City's Greenwich Village make our university appealing to students from around the globe. According to U.S. News & World Report, The New School has a higher percentage of international undergraduates than any other college in the United States. Many international students attend our renowned graduate programs as well.

If you are an international applicant (not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident), you will receive information about obtaining a student visa after you are admitted to a program of study (see below). In addition, the following special requirements may apply to you.

International Transcripts

All applicants submitting a transcript from a secondary school, college, or university outside the United States must provide an original official transcript along with a certified English language translation of any transcript not written in English. Applicants who wish to transfer academic credits earned at institutions outside the United States must also have their transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES), our preferred provider, or another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A course-by-course evaluation report must be prepared for each transcript. Note also that an admission committee may require a transcript evaluation even if an applicant is petitioning to transfer credits. If you request your evaluation on the WES website, search for "New School Undergraduate" or "New School Graduate."

Proof of English Language Proficiency

Applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States must demonstrate their ability to understand and communicate in English by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examination. Minimum acceptable scores are 100 on the TOEFL Internet test and 7.0 on the IELTS test. The test must have been taken during the past two years.

The minimum TOEFL score is 88 for applicants to an undergraduate program and 100 for applicants to a graduate program. Visit the TOEFL website for more information. The TOEFL score report must be submitted directly to The New School by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) (the institution code for The New School for Public Engagement is 2554). The minimum score on the IELTS examination is 6.5 for applicants to an undergraduate program and 7.0 for for applicants to a graduate program.

Exceptions

Citizens of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa who speak English as their first language and students from any country who attended a college or university in the United States for four years and received a degree are not required to provide TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Student Visas

International students accepted to The New School who need the I-20 or DS-2019 form to obtain a visa will receive a link to the online International Student Application Packet in their acceptance letters. The packet is also accessible through the Accepted Student tab in MyNewSchool. This Web page includes information about applying for the I-20 or DS-2019, guidelines for providing financial documents, instructions and procedures for F-1 transfer students, and other important forms and information. Financial Aid and Scholarships

International students who have been admitted to the undergraduate degree program can submit the New School's International Student Scholarship Application.

International students who have been admitted to a graduate degree program will be considered for merit-based scholarships as part of the application review process.
