You can create media while you study it in The New School's innovative master's program in media studies. An interdisciplinary curriculum in media theory, history, social analytics, and business includes hands-on work with film, video, audio, and Web-based media.
The Master of Arts in Media Studies prepares students for a wide range of careers, including advertising, journalism, TV and radio, online media, media research, social advocacy, and education. Some graduates go on to earn a PhD and stay in academia. Others seek creative careers as filmmakers, artists, and communication designers.
This is flexible and partly self-designed graduate program. You can study full-time or part-time, and classes are scheduled to accommodate working students. Many courses are offered online, and it is possible to study and earn your degree from anywhere in the world without coming to New York City.
You can be a generalist or you can specialize. You can write a master's thesis, complete a "thesis production," or follow our non-thesis option. The School of Media Studies has organized sets of courses as focus areas for students who want to specialize. Currently, the following focus areas have been defined:
- Documentary Studies
- Film and Video
- Media Design
- Media Management
- Media and the Urban Environment
- Media Theory
- Social Media and Social Change
- Sound Studies and Acoustic Environments
- Transnational Media Studies
