Since its inception in 2002, the International Field Program has provided a way for emerging practitioners to gain experience in the field while following a rigorous course of study that provides a critical context for understanding global issues.

Over the past decade, more than 660 students have participated in the International Field Program (IFP), in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe. Students gain practical field experience through work and research with NGOs, international organizations, government, and local agencies. The program is open to all master's students at the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy and, with approval, to students across The New School.

Students who meet the eligibility requirements can apply to the IFP and are selected through a competitive review process.

The 2013 IFP offers seven summer sites, where students work on projects ranging from postconflict state building to long-term monitoring and evaluation of projects with international organizations such as the World Bank. Program Cost and Scholarships

All costs listed below are the student's responsibility unless otherwise specified.

Fixed Costs
Tuition: 6 credits
The cost per credit is the same as for the fall and spring semesters.

IFP Program Fees
The $500 fee covers administrative costs associated with running the spring-summer program.

Additional Variable Costs

1. Airfare to and from the program site
2. Local travel and transportation
3. Living and personal expenses beyond housing. Please note that housing is provided; because of university policy, students cannot opt out of housing arrangements.
4. Vaccinations and other medical expenses
5. Visas (see the visa information page for details)

Financing the IFP
Students with Milano scholarships can apply them toward IFP summer tuition.
They must also pay a $500 IFP program fee.

Apply to the International Field Program

To apply for the 2013 IFP you must complete the online application and, at the end of the process, upload the following three documents:

1. A recent resume or CV
2. A brief essay for your first choice IFP country
3. A brief essay for your second choice IFP country

Have these documents ready before you begin filling out this application. Without these document files available and ready for upload, you will not be able to complete the application process.

The brief essays (approximately 500 words) should explain:

1. Your reasons for wanting to participate in that particular IFP site, what relevant experience or coursework draws you to spend the summer in that country?
2. What prior experiences (research, internships, community service, travel, extracurricular activities, etc.) have you had that make you a strong candidate?
3. What you expect to gain from the experience and how the IFP fits into your future studies and goals.

Should you be invited for an interview, you must be available for one of the interview sessions that will be held from Monday, October 15 to Friday, October 26, 2012. We will be contacting you in mid-October to schedule an appointment.
