Students are guided through the entire process of writing a script for a full-length motion picture. This program is open to anyone who aspires to complete a professional-quality screenplay, including people with and without college degrees and current undergraduate students.
The New School awards a certificate in screenwriting for successful completion of a sequence of approved courses. Upon completing the core sequence of screenwriting courses, students have a comprehensive grounding in story, character, theme, action, visuals, and dialogue, as they have been carefully guided through the entire screenplay writing process by our distinguished faculty. The certificate program is open to committed students from any background. It can be completed entirely online by students who cannot or do not wish to take classes on campus.
Registered certificate students are invited to School of Media Studies special events, including guest lectures, special
screenings and media exhibitions, and receive information about optional internships.
Certificate courses can be taken on a noncredit basis or for undergraduate credit, but students must register as certificate students. Certificate approval will not be awarded retroactively for any course.

Admission
There is no formal admission process for the screenwriting certificate. Simply register for certificate approval and pay the certificate registration fee. You must have your certificate registration form signed in the School of Media Studies before you go to register. Exception
International students who will require a student visa to enter the United States must call 212.229.5150 or 800.292.3040 for admission information.
Students in the NSPE undergraduate program may be able to earn the certificate concurrently with their bachelor's degree. To learn more, speak to an admission counselor or an academic advisor in the School of Undergraduate Studies.
Taking Individual Courses
All the screenwriting courses can be taken individually for undergraduate general credit or on a noncredit basis provided the student has completed any prerequisites.
