  • The Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports offers many opportunities for students to become physically active and meet new friends. Our mission is to bring recreation and sports to the student body. Our structured and non-structured programs serve to increase positive social interaction and build community. We design programs and activities for students at all levels of experience, ability, knowledge, and interest. We also build leadership and professional development in our student volunteer staff.

    Our goals

    • Promote well-being
    • Strengthen campus community
    • Develop leadership skills
    • Encourage self-advocacy

Throughout the academic year, the office hosts weekly group fitness programs, intramural team sports, outdoor activities, and special events. In addition, The New School now offers three competitive athletic teams: men's basketball, and women's and men's cross country track teams. Through participation in recreational activities and intramural and interscholastic sports, students develop critical life skills like teamwork, stress reduction, and networking. Note: most events are also open to New School faculty and staff.

    Programs include

    • Intramural sports (organized team sports)
    • Group fitness classes (including yoga, Pilates, zumba, and dance)
    • Outdoor recreation (including hiking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting)
    • Special events and programs (including The New School Olympics, Turkey Trot, Yankees baseball tickets, and bowling)
    • Athletic teams (men's basketball, women's and men's cross country)

The Office of Recreation and Intramural Sports encourages students to get involved in programs and make suggestions for future activities. The office is also interested in collaborating with other groups; please contact us with any ideas.
