What does the Office of Career Development do?
The Office of Career development at The New School aims to help your child identify, plan and implement sound career decisions that lead to personal and professional growth as a student and eventually, as a graduate. Career Development is here to assist students and alumni, whether its career exploration, choosing a major or acquainting them with job search skills and appropriate resources to reach their career goals. We assist students at every stage of their career development, whether they are looking for a summer job as a first year student, trying to find an internship to gain experience or applying for the right job opportunity after graduation.

We take a holistic and educational approach to career and life planning through programs and services that seek to bridge the need for self-awareness with knowledge of the world of work. Ultimately we are committed to empowering students to enter the competitive global economy with confidence and competence.

What kinds of services, resources and programs do you offer?

• One-on-one career counseling
• Assessment and career exploration
• Access to jobs and internships online, including Federal Work study, off and on-campus employment both full and part-time
• Career information and resources including specialized resources for diverse populations.
• Strategies for effective job searching (online and offline).
• Résumé and CV reviews.
• Help in developing effective interviewing skills through mock interview sessions.
• Cover letter and other job search correspondence writing techniques.
• Workshops & special events on a wide range of topics throughout the semester.
• Personality and skills assessment testing.
• Specialized and general Career Fairs
• Guidance on applying for graduate and professional schools

When should students use our services?
Many new students are under the impression that our office is only able to help seniors. This is not true. We encourage students from their first year on campus to become familiar with our services and begin developing the skills needed for lifelong career success.

Which employers hire our students?
Every year, over 1000 organizations contact the office in order to recruit New School students. In addition, we subscribe to a number of job listings including the International Careers Employment Weekly, Graduate Jobs and New England Conservatory of Music, among others. What role do parents play and how can parents help?
The most important role you can play is to encourage your son or daughter to make use of the programs and services offered. Students who frequent Career Development throughout their four years at The New School are much better prepared and successful in finding opportunities that lead them to either jobs and/or graduate school.

You can also encourage your child to get involved in extracurricular activities, such as student organizations or volunteer opportunities, on or off campus. In this way, they will have the chance to meet new people and integrate themselves into more than one community, as well as gain valuable skills and experiences that will serve them well as they explore different careers paths.
