The Student Activities Board (SAB) seeks to break down barriers between the formal schools of The New School to create a more unified student body. We hope to do this through supporting and producing student-generated events. Through our committees and members efforts we try to provide expertise and resources to students to help streamline the processes needed to provide a variety of educational and entertaining programs.

Roles and Committees

• Joining–there are no specific requirements or experience needed for students who want join the board. Full commitment is expected when joining the board.
• Advisor–The SAB advisor is a staff member of the OSDA that advises and gives expertise to the board regarding policies and procedures of The New School.
• Chair–Appointed initially by OSDA, the board can appoint a new chair through majority vote. Board Chair of SAB serves as point person/liaison between the board, OSDA, & outside organizations. Chair oversees all operations of all committees. The Chair also serves as an Executive Member of the Student Activities Finance Committee.
• Rotating Committees (Program, Advertising, Catering, and Decoration)–For each event, a committee chair is appointed for each committee

Programming/Planning Procedures

• Events are brainstormed and voted unanimously as a group usually the previous semester or summer. As new ideas come about, if timing, funding and proper planning can be provided, the board may plan and implement programs as such.
• The board works in rotating committees (optional) meaning members and chairs can change committees after each event.
• No SAB member is bound to one committee.
• Meetings are held every week as a whole board in order to update/give progress reports.
• It is up to the Board and Committee Chairs to make sure communication and tasks are implemented outside of the meetings.

Collaborating with Student Activities Board

The Student Activities Board actively seeks to work in partnership with other entities to provide activities and events for The New School students and the university community. Because the Student Activities Board is funded by the Office of Student Development & Activities, any commitment of funds is subject to departmental and New School guidelines. The New School students must be the primary beneficiaries of events funded or partially funded by SAB money. There must be active involvement by the Student Activities Board in the decision-making process and event implementation. This means that SAB will not-co-sponsor events merely to provide funding for events without participation in the planning process.

Co-Sponsorship Procedure:

• Initiate contact between SAB and co-sponsoring organization(s).
• Prospective co-sponsor contacts SAB board chair /board member to request collaboration on an event.
• A written proposal is required.
• Prospective co-sponsors are invited to a SAB meeting.
• SAB and prospective co-sponsor meet during regular board meeting to discuss initial terms of event, determine if event meets co-sponsorship guidelines, and decide if there is mutual interest.
• A final decision will be made within two weeks of request depending on if the above-mentioned requirements have been satisfied.
• SAB and co-sponsor(s) meet to review event details, assign event duties, determine event budget, and complete co-sponsorship packet.
• Two weeks after the event, the SAB and SAB Advisor meet with the co-sponsoring organization(s) to evaluate the event and resolve financial details.
• DO contact SAB at least 4 weeks in advance of proposed event date
• DO designate a "point person" from your organization to maintain communication with SAB
• DO check ODSA Events Calendar for other activities that might conflict with your potential programming idea
• DO have an estimation of expenses and other basic resources required to implement the event
• DO understand that co-sponsorships incorporate and equitable exchange from participating organizations
• DON'T approach SAB as a last-minute funding source for an already planned program
