New York State Residency Information
The New York State
grant programs are intended to cover the tuition costs at New York colleges and
schools. To be eligible for TAP, you must be a New York State resident for 12
consecutive months before enrolling in the program for which assistance is
sought and attend an eligible school or college located in New York State. Residing in New York State for the sole
purpose of attending college does not constitute proof of residency. TAP
applicants who are required to submit proof of New York State residency should
submit a copy of your New York State Driver's License or New York State
Non-Driver Photo ID Card issued 12 months prior to enrollment or earlier to The
New School Financial Aid Office at 72 Fifth Avenue, Lower Level, New York, NY
10011, or by email to sfs@newschool.edu.
Other forms of proof, such as a lease agreement, utility bill, or NY
state tax returns, etc. can also be accepted on a case by case basis.
Ability to Benefit Information
Students must meet HESC’s Ability to Benefit
requirement to be eligible for state aid. Having completed high school in the
United States satisfies this requirement, as well as a
GED, having a domestic or foreign college degree validated by that country’s
Ministry of Education, or by completing the 24-core college credits dictated by
HESC. Taking an Ability
to Benefit test is not an option, as The New School does not host or administer Ability
to Benefit tests.
