Federal Work Study Opportunities

The Federal Work Study (FWS) program provides employment opportunities for students enrolled in a degree and/or certificate program and registered for at least six credits in a semester. The program is administered by the Office of Student Financial Services.

Several rules apply to all FWS positions. Students are permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week throughout the academic year when classes are in session. During the summer (if eligible) and official recesses, students can work a maximum of 35 hours per week. Earnings from student jobs are not applied directly to tuition bills; rather, students are paid biweekly for their hours of work, and they determine how best to use these funds to meet their educational expenses.

Students whose financial aid award letter includes an FWS offer must activate their award by obtaining a position and submitting all required paperwork. FWS positions are listed online at www.newschool.edu/student-jobs along with contact information for the hiring supervisors. Students should apply for positions directly to the supervisor but, once hired, should submit all payroll paperwork to the Office of Student Financial Services for processing. Student Financial Services processes all payroll information for work study students and oversees compliance with FWS policies and procedures.

For more information on student employment policies, refer to the FAQ or the FWS Handbook, or contact the Student Employment Office at 212.229.8930 or seo@newschool.edu. Student Financial Services counselors are available at the walk-in center at 72 Fifth Avenue Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., to answer questions about FWS employment.

To use your federal work study award, you must obtain a position at https://careers.newschool.edu by October 15, 2013. If you do not plan to use your work study award, please contact Student Financial Services.
