Public Transportation

The New School is committed to encouraging the use of alternative transportation to reduce the environmental footprint of our students, faculty and staff. The New School could not be better situated for access to New York City's famous subway and bus system. The central campus and outlying building are also linked by the city's growing network of bike lanes. A pretax public transportation expense benefit is available for employees. Bicycling

The New School’s Greenwich Village center and outlying facilities are also linked by the city's growing network of bike lanes. In spring 2010, a university survey was distributed to identify strategies to promote cycling among the New School community. Based on the survey findings, the New School bicycle committee developed a plan based on the following priorities:

• Install secure bicycle parking in all residence halls
• Offer secure indoor bicycle parking near the Greenwich Village campus
• Develop a bicycle access policy for the campus
• Create cycling resources for students, faculty, and staff (e.g. maps, pamphlets)

 A follow-up student commuter survey was conducted in fall 2010. The results from this survey will be used to identify the next steps of the comprehensive bicycle plan.

Bicycle Parking

The New York City Department of Transportation CityRacks program has facilitated installation of sidewalk bicycle racks in front of several of the university’s academic buildings. Today, there are 114 secure bike parking spaces outside of New School buildings - 10 were installed as recently as last fall per a request by the university. 

In addition to the sidewalk racks, secure indoor bicycle parking is available for students, faculty, and staff at Imperial Parking Garage on East 14th Street for $25 per semester (payable by cash or check only). A permit can be purchased in Facilities Management (71 Fifth Avenue, 9th floor; open weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Bicycle Resources

The New York City Department of Transportation offers a cycling map of all five boroughs. And New York City's first bike share program CitiBike will launch in the fall of 2012. It is anticipated that many bike share kiosks will be in very convenient locations for The New School community.
