Brief Description:
This course surveys the history of economic thought since 1870, beginning with marginalism and the origins of the neoclassical school. We then turn to the contributions of Marshall, Wcksell, Schumpeter, Robinson, Veblen and Keynes. Finally, we survey developments in political economy, emphasizing the interdisciplinary tradition of Polanyi and contemporary issues in Marxian and Institutional economics. The discussion will be framed by consideration of methodological and epistemological issues related to political economy regarding realism, empiricism, and the scientific status of economics.
